Doesn’t the Senator Have Bigger Issues on His Plate?

Today Senator Arlen Specter (R-Penn) called for an investigation into allegations that the New England Patriots illegally video taped their opponents.  There was, he said, an obvious conflict between the NFL and the public interest.  What does professional football have to do with the public interest?  How does gridiron action figure into the commonweal?  As a nation, we are fighting wars on two fronts, running a trillion dollar deficit, paying $4 for a gallon of gas, and our economy is tettering on the brink of recession.  Meanwhile, a cyclone has ravaged Myanmar, an earthquake in China killed 13,000 people. Where does the game winning touchdown pass, or blocked punt fit into this?  “…the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon at time handed out military command, high civil office, legions – everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.” Juvenal
