“Archivists are the new macho heroes of Washington.” Maureen Dowd on Vice President Cheney’s attempt to keep his papers out of the National Achieves. Cheney can push around Secretaries of State and Pentagon generals, but the archivists push back. And if you think the archivists are tough, don’t even think about messing with the librarians!

This afternoon, in a vote of 151 to 45, the Massachusetts legislature defeated a measure to put a proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage off the 2008 ballot. Finally, the circus is leaving town. Finally, we can move on. What a wonderful relief to know that we are married, we can stay married and that others [...]

In an op-ed piece in New York Times’ on immigration, David Brooks quotes Manuel Castells “Elites are cosmopolitan, people are local.” Does that mean that elites aren’t people?

Once upon a time, we lived in a country where the President assured us that we had nothing to fear but fear itself. Now, post 9/11, our leaders would have us live in constant fear. Our leaders insist that we submit to unwarranted searches, fill our bathtubs with water and stockpile plastic sheeting and duct tape. [...]
Caution: National Politics Are Hazardous to Gay Rights

Excited by the HRC’s report on the Democratic candidates’ stand on GLBT issues? Don’t be. No president – even a Democratic one (remember Bill “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell/Defense of Marriage Act” Clinton?) is going to magically fix everything. Gay rights come from the state house and the court house, not the White House. Most anti-gay measures come out of state [...]

Let me start by saying that never, not in a million years, did I think that I’d be a mom. Growing up, I never played with baby dolls – crying, wetting, nursing dolls - way to messy for me. The only doll that interested me was Barbie. Barbie had breasts. Barbie drove a Corvette convertible. Barbie lived in a [...]
